Ralph Fasanella (1914–1997) was a self-taught American painter celebrated for his large, colorful, and politically charged works depicting working-class life, labor movements, and urban America. He is widely regarded as one of the most important folk/outsider artists of the 20th century. Born in the Bronx to Italian immigrant parents. Worked a series of physical labor jobs: textile worker, truck driver, ice delivery, and more. Did not begin painting seriously until his early 30s, treating art as an extension of political activism. His paintings are dense, crowded, and highly detailed, often filling every inch of the canvas. Rich with symbolism, banners, signs, political slogans, and community life.
