Alice Asmar is an American artist born in 1929, of Lebanese and Greek descent. From an early age she showed artistic talent — one record says that by age ten she had designed and painted a “cathedral” window at her elementary school in Portland. She graduated magna cum laude from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, and earned a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from University of Washington in Seattle. Interestingly, she accepted a job for a short time at Boeing as an engineering drafter but left to pursue art. She travelled widely — across the Near East, Europe (France, Switzerland, Italy, Turkey, the Greek Islands, Yugoslavia) and her studios have been located in California, New Mexico and Oregon. Asmar’s work is notable for combining her deep love of nature (trees, rocks, ocean mists) with a respectful and sustained engagement with Native American cultures and the Southwestern U.S. aesthetic. She often depicted Native American ceremonial dance scenes, Indian portraits, landscapes of the Southwest, and symbolic totems.
