This is a particularly charming example of mid-century American illustration and pictorial cartography. Your poster is “Folklore and Legends of Our Country” (1960), illustrated by Frank J. Soltesz (1912–1986) for Esso Standard Oil, a division of Humble Oil & Refining Company.
What makes it especially interesting is that it wasn't originally created as fine art. It was an educational and promotional map designed to celebrate American folklore, history, and storytelling.
Artist Frank J. Soltesz was an American commercial illustrator born in Pennsylvania in 1912. He worked primarily from the 1930s through the 1960s.
He became particularly well known for his extraordinarily detailed industrial illustrations.
Between 1947 and 1951, he created a series of advertisements for the Armstrong Cork Company featuring elaborate cutaway views of factories and commercial buildings. These illustrations appeared in The Saturday Evening Post and were popular enough that readers could request large prints suitable for framing.
