This is a wonderful example of mid-century Danish graphic design. The poster is “A.B.C. Revyen” (1956) by Bjørn Wiinblad, one of Denmark's most celebrated decorative artists.
What makes it particularly interesting is that it was originally designed as a theatrical advertisement, rather than as a standalone work of fine art. Today, it's collected as an example of Scandinavian poster design.
The poster advertised a Danish revue, a theatrical variety show featuring comedy, music, dance, and satire. Wiinblad also worked as a theatrical set and costume designer, making this commission especially suited to his artistic interests.
Bjørn Wiinblad was born in Copenhagen in 1918 and died in 2006. He became internationally recognized for his imaginative decorative work across many mediums.
Unlike the restrained, functional aesthetic often associated with Danish Modern design, Wiinblad embraced exuberance, ornamentation, romanticism, and fantasy.
He worked in ceramics, porcelain, textiles, illustration, theater design, and posters. In 1957, he began his long association with the German porcelain manufacturer Rosenthal, which helped bring his designs to an international audience.
We will likely cut off all the lower section of letters since this poster is otherwise 67” inches tall.
