We went deep into our archive of posters and decided on designing a gorgeous one by Werner Curilla (signed Curi) - a German original travel poster circa 1950. You can see original gold embossing on the grapes and leaves - it’s just how they printed it back then. The poster has a naturally toned aging to it and was extremely difficult to mount given how thin the paper was on posters made back then. After all the poster was 40 inches tall originally.
It’s an interesting time period for Germany having issued this poster because we imagine their attempts to reignite tourism in a nation that was less than a decade out from World War II and the memories weighing on the world’s mind about visiting such a superpower and the lasting reputation that remained for years thereafter. A jovial sign-post perhaps to a pub, we found it fitting to adorn a bust of a man with pipe silhouette in the lower corner, and title the work with a nod to the country’s effort to invite visitor’s back by noting the saying “Hospitable Germany”. A unique piece of history preserved in the form of a hand-cut PAR.
We estimate the work to be approximately 1000 pcs. It is stunning in-person and we hope we paid homage to the original poster by keeping portions of sky and clouds around the signpost without just following the wrought-iron edge. Enjoy adding this one to your collection.
