Puzzles with a Past
There's a good reason why…
- LIFE Magazine in pages pf pictures, featured Par and its wood cuts, alone of all 'jig saws'
- Par Puzzles have been called "wizardry in wood"
- Good Housekeeping ran a lead article on the puzzles from the saw of the sea horse…
…why other national magazines and newspapers have turned editorial eyes on Par when 'jig saw' has been in editorial minds.
Par Picture Puzzled were originally designed by two past owners of the company as a hobby, planned for their amusement alone. The aim was simply better puzzles…not profit. The makers were both puzzle fans of many years standing. They knew relative merits of the good puzzles then on the market. And they knew, too, that certain definite improvements and refinements in materials, in workmanship were possible.
They experimented for months…with pictures printed on different papers… trying many woods and styles of cutting… testing saw blades and glues. They developed rigid specifications. Then they made puzzles which set a new standard.
Friends saw these puzzles and begged or borrowed. They in turn told others in a widening circle… in 1932 a basement hobby became a going business.
Today the basis of that business continues unchanged… to make finer puzzles. Each Par Picture Puzzle is still individually cut by skilled craftsman. Every other step in their manufacture receives the same time and care, every puzzle the finish of fine cabinet work as at the beginning. Mass production has no part in their making. Each is an "original", a "first edition"; there can be no duplicate.
